Exploiting the power of the computer

As reported today in the Wisconsin Technology news, the WCHQ is moving forward to report quality outcomes in physician practices..."The Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality has been chosen to lead an effort to report medical outcomes in physician and clinic settings, but participation will not necessarily be based on the level of technology investment."

As encouraging as the WCHQ actions are, it is still a mystery why the health industry, in general, and physician practices, in particular, have failed to capitalize on the promise of computing technology.

Medicine is one of the most complex, information driven industries. Even moreso with the advent of practice protocols, standards and best in class clinical practice guidelines. Yet, as an industry, we continue to defer basic process changes to incorporate clinical computing and to demand that vendors and software developers create functional, reliable, efficient computing systems that enhance efficiency and quality.
