The IOM and 6 Aims for Improvement - Effective

Aim #2: Care should be EFFECTIVE: providing services based on scientific knowledge to all who could benefit and refraining from providing services to those not likely to benefit.

How many sources are there for scientific, evidence-based medical care?
Thousands!

It's truly amazing that amount of information that is at our fingertips to help us make informed decisions (whether as a physician or a patient). Perhaps too much information, but we certainly can't complain of a lack of free, easy to digest information. A few sites: National Quality Forum, ICSI, Evidence Based Medicine Toolkit, OMNI United Kingdom, and so on.

How are we doing at putting it into practice? In most cases, basic practice protocols are applied less than 50% to 60% of the time. Higher rates are achieved when the results (outcomes) are published in publically available forums and use standard methodology for tracking outcomes.

Step by step, making progress....
