IOM and the Six Aims for Improvment - #4 Timely

Care should be timely. Passionately eliminate waits and delays in care. Dr. Mark Murray and Ms. Catherine Tantau packaged the notion of advanced access almost a decade ago as part of their work with Kaiser in California. Originally, this work was thought to apply to primary care group practices heavily dominated by managed care contracting (especially the pre-paid and gatekeeper flavor). Yet, the model has been continuously refined and applied to fee for service practices, specialty medicine and even surgical practices. Further, the model has proven reliable to eliminate waits and delays in diagnostic testing. The Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality has required all participants to standardize reporting on access using the very measures and methods of advanced access (viola Murray).

It's a rare thing to find a technique that has been so broadly adopted and proven so robust. Maybe...someday...we can get rid of the dreaded waiting room...but then, what would we do with all of our old magazines?
