Is there Health Care Reform in Your Future?

To Be or Not To Be, That is the Question;
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mission to suffer
The regulations and congressional acts of outrageous politics,
Or to take the balance sheet against the sea of credit troubles
And by opposing end them. To rest – to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to mean we end
The heart-ache of a thousand budget cuts and layoffs
That administration is heir to: ‘tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish’d. To end the senseless war;
To sleep, perchance to dream of a former time –
Ay, there’s the rub:

The above, though poorly transposed from Bill S. however, describes the results of a recent survey from a small panel of notables in the field of healthcare asking if they believe meaningful federal healthcare reform will actually happen this year. The majority indicated a firm belief that reform will crash on the rocks before we hit the summer (July) recess. Neither fiery debate nor the ramrod of reconciliation can result in reform according to the survey responses. Interestingly enough, of all the respondents a few (less than 30 % indicated reform will happen. Yet of these optimists most felt that reform will come via the parliamentary maneuverings of budget reconciliation…not much confidence that meaningful debate would actually yield thoughtful reform.

So, what do we make of this? Charge ahead and take to the sea with your healthcare venture as the domestic issues are far from clear. Even if reform does happen, promulgating regulations and the inevitable ‘adjustment’ period means that we are several years out from reform (again!).

Making A Difference in the Life of A Youth

Every so often I come across a great organization doing wonderful things in the name of our Lord. It's even more enjoyable when there is an opportunity to directly experience the work. Next month, the "In His Wakes" ministry will be in Wisconsin. Last year, our family got a taste of this event and found it to truly be a Day To Remember.


In His Wakes, a Florida based, non-profit water sports ministry, travels across the United States and internationally bringing the gospel of hope, demolishing fears and building confidence in today’s youth through an experience of a lifetime!

In His Wakes Ministries was founded in 2003 by Kristi Overton Johnson. Kristi is a native of Greenville, North Carolina, a world champion water-skier and has a heart to serve our Lord Jesus Christ. In His Wakes ministers to at-risk youth by using a unique and relevant message shaped around a day of water sports activities through a program called “A Day to Remember.” Our “Day to Remember” event will provide participants with a day of water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, riding in boats and organized beach activities. The “Day to Remember” is concluded with a Gospel message and an award ceremony which recognizes each child as a champion in God’s eyes as they receive gold medals with the verse from Jeremiah 29:11 “for I know the plans I have for you………plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” They also receive a bag of goodies including a bible and other items.

“A Day to Remember is far more than just a day of skiing and entertaining youth. It is a day that will be remembered FOREVER by the participants, volunteers, and sponsors. “A Day to Remember” can change lives through activities that build relationships, trust, drop barriers of fear, give a chance for success and for the champion within to emerge! In His Wakes is on a mission to change one life at a time through “A Day to Remember.”


In His Wakes is coming to Lake DuBay Wisconsin in July to provide an incredible opportunity for youth to be positively affected spiritually, physically and emotionally. It will be a defining moment that can change lives as they move onto the waters of life! Feedback from last year’s event was extremely positive from participants and volunteers as well.

From Sara Miller: "I am my brothers keeper". My comment/question: Should health care be a for profit enterprise? We have a public supported basic K-12 educational system. Perhaps we should have the same for healthcare. There of course should be some profit but it should be reinvested to improve access, infrastructure and delivery of this basic need. that is my thought.

From Charlie Moore: why is it that the health care discussion be based upon Chritain values? What about just good old human values. Those to me are boundless! This is not meant to demean or ignore the virtues of Christanity but to open the door to thoughts that are not of a Christain vein but are also virtuous and considerate of a higher power and directed with a good toward humanity.

I'm interested in starting a discussion for those Christians in the group about a online accountability group for healthcare executives. We face so many choices in the decisions we make on a daily basis that it occurs to me we may benefit from colleague with whom we can share in our concerns and seek support from one another. Like Cornelius (the roman centurian who was a leader of men, yet fully trusting in the Lord, became a positive for for Jesus Christ) we are leaders in the modern day, yet also need to be trusting witnesses to the faith.
